Recently there have been some serious problems with a couple of ICQ clients, aICQ being one of them. The problem has been that incoming messages have not been received properly. It would have seemed like all your friends were silent all the time. Thanks to some fast research by Dan, there is now an update which should take care of this issue. If you use AtarICQ, make sure to grab this update ASAP!

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Once again it is time for The Nordic Atari Show, this annual gathering that brings us together to share experiences, talk, and let software and hardware change owners. It is now the eleventh year in a row that NAS manifests. We really hope that all expectations will be fulfilled and everyone can express their interest for Atari. As was the case the previous two years, NAS is again scheduled a weekend in the vacation month of July.

One large room will host any commercial stands, plus demonstrations by programmers and other Atari friends. Many different models of Atari and compatibles will be shown.

The largest room will host lectures and exhibitor demonstrations of applications, system software, games, and hardware solutions.

Other activities will include small competitions of different kinds. It has not yet been determined which, though likely at least one classic game on an Atari will figure in some way.
Refreshments available on site will consist of soda in cans and coffee.
The event is located in a school, so everyone is expected to follow the rules of conduct that apply to these premises.

News in this version:

it is now possible to set how long aICQ should wait until a message is considered to be read. AtarICQ will count the time from the moment that the user starts view a contact message with the message window topped! If you temporarily have another window topped, aICQ will reset the timer.

Lots of general changes and additions to preferences for a change. Check them out, should hopefully be logical to figure stuff out. If not, have a look in the HYP.

A verynasty bug fixed, which would make AtarICQ crash upon certain AV-messages. Thanks to Martin Byttebier for patience during tests.

Internal handling of contact data has been reworked, allowing for better flexibility which might prove important for future additions.

The routine for unshading windows now uses WIND_SET(hdl&,22365,0,0,0,0) to allow it to work also with new XaAES.

Fixed a problem where TT-RAM would (if present) be reserved for the DMA sound buffer.

15.10.2004 - News Reporter: LAFABRIE Florente - [top]
New version after a large work (1 year) of research of bugs and insertion of innovations. The treatment can be 70% faster with Magic PC and faster 50% with the CT60. The program is free, but it is necessary to ask me for a code of activation. For those which do not know it yet, Icon Extract extracts the icons colors (from 1 to 32 bits) from files ICO, CUR, ANI, ICL, DLL and XPM to safeguard them with format RSC (for Interface or Ressource Master).

Minimum: TT or Falcon + accelerating card or PC with Magic PC. The program is developed on Falcon 030 + CT60 100 MHz + 256 Mo of SDRAM

The program and the list of the innovations are in French. Afflicted, but I do not have enough time for all to translate. Good loading,

Florent

"SuperFly" - New Game From Reservoir Gods Released

Guildford, England - Dec 13th 2002 - RG, a leading developer of entertainment software for the Atari platform today announced the release of a new action game "SuperFly".

You take the role of madcap inventor Dr Snuggles, on a mission to rescue his girlfriend from the evil clutches of Professor Evil. Over the course of the game you will pilot a range of different vehiclees over a variety of different worlds.

The gameplay takes place over a horizontally scrolling playfield. The game mechanic is simple, yet fiendishly addictive. As you progress through the game you gain experience points which allow you to unlock new game modes and different worlds to play in.

New facts from the developer meeting of the coldfire-project
Last weekend the core of the Atari Coldfire Project met at Oliver Kotschi's place to discuss the next steps of our project. Sadly, Jörg Wilhelm - the chief of Wilhelm Electronics - did not managed to attend to our meeting. Thus, he could not present his hardware solution. Even so, we held long discussions via telephone about the details of his hardware. Some important issues are still left. They will be debated during the next days.

Another big topic at the meeting was the future of the operating system.

Please stay patient about more detailed information. We do not want to release concrete information about technical data, price and release date until a final agreement is found. <

HighWire 0.5 Released!
The HighWire Development team is proud to announce the latest release of HighWire 0.05.

With this release, HighWire now displays GIF images. GIF support required a bit of porting work for the team, but we now have the most current versions of Zlib and libungif working for LatticeC, PureC and GCC. These will prepare the way for even more supports in the future. With GIF files displaying in HighWire, work was required on the IMG tag support. There are still some problems with the IMG tag currently. But they are not related directly to GIF support and are of a more general nature. There has been and will continue to be work in this area.

Text formatting was another major area of work in this version. Problems with justification, alignment and colours having been dealt with. Work was also done on lists and their display. Not to mention low level improvements on font sizing.

Bugs were eliminated at a furious pace, with more bug reports being eliminated from the bugtracker site than in any previous version. Small problems with GDOS detection and redraws were dealt with among others. The final result being a general improvement in the function of the program.

To download, visit the download page on the HighWire site at http://highwire.atari-users.net (see link)

The Reservoir Gods announce the release of their new game "GodPey".
Loosely based on the popular Bandai Wonderswan title "GunPey", the RG version is packed with new features and enhancements.

The game is an arcade puzzle game with a multitude of game modes. As you play the game you earn experience points that unlock new areas, new characters, secrets and extras.

"GodPey" can be played as single player experience, but you can also compete in multiplayer head to head battles with your mates.

As you gain experience and open new sections of the game, you will finally unlock the story mode, an epic quest which takes you to a variety of locations where you battle many different monsters in order to regain your vegetables.

The game features 14 exclusive pieces of new SID chip music, stereo sampled sound and 32 colours on screen. It supports all conventional controllers including jaguar pads.

"GodPey" runs on all Atari machines, but requires a minimum of 1MB of memory. It detects the hardware it is running on and will utilise extra features such as blitter accelerated graphics, enhanced palettes and DMA sound.

Level 9 Interpreter successfully ported to Atari ST
The Level 9 Interpreter 2.0 has been ported successfully to the Atari. L9 2.0 is used to play classic Level 9 text adventures of the 80's on today's computers. Level 9 had big success especially in England with relatively simple adventures which fitted on a single cassette. They were also known as Britain's answer to Infocom. The interpreter play all old Level 9 games but it does not show graphics. Game files are required but don't have to be obtained from the ST versions of the games.

HighWire Version 0.02 Released!
Version 0.02 of the html Rendering Engine HighWire is now available for download.

There have been great improvements in both speed and stability recently. Several little annoying GEM interface problems have been eliminated. Table support has been expanded, however it is not yet finished. We also have a French version of the documentation available with the help of ProToS from the Arcadia Crew. Hopefully this release will silence some of the detractors who have been saying our task is impossible. Our goal is achievable, it will just take time and your support. We can always use more programmers and support on the documentation side of the project always is a critical need. Translation support for more languages would be a great addition to the project as well.

BIG NEWS: Hotz MIDI Translator Released !
IIt is now a reality. One of the most sought after , coveteted and rare MIDI systems is now released as FREEWARE. The Atari Version of the Hotz MIDI Translator.

I have been working closly with Jimmy Hotz and Accordance Music

Systems in creating a license Agreement and also special ZIPS of the software. The download page at Accordance is now completed, which is linked to my page:see link

This page also contains a Tutorial on how to use the software as well as Pics of the Hotz Box with many links to other Hotz pages on the net.

This is a very unique tool which is now released to an unsuspecting Atari-MIDI community. Please go to the page to find out more info about it as well as the download page of the software itself. However, you will need to agree to the license before you can download it. You will also need to provide your Email address and location. This is for Accordances's internal tracking purposes only. They just want to know who is actually interested in this type of software. Lets not dissapoint them!!

This is the cumulation of many months and YEARS of waiting on my part for this to finally happen! I was able to contact Jimmy Hotz thru formor Hybrid Arts programmer Tom Bajoras (who was the actual programmer for the Atari version of the Hotz Translator!) There were some legal issues to clear up before the release. Finally I contacted Accordance itself, which was the "current" Hotz Corporation. I had favourable response, and after several months now , it is finally released.

I am now happy to present the Atari Version of the Hotz MIDI translator. ENJOY!

As rumours are rifle of at least two Falcon emulators for the PC, I thought that some TOS 4.x images ought to be listed somewhere for people to download. A short while ago I was looking for Jaguar boot image for an emulator as well which took me absolutley ages to find, was eventually found buried in a Polish FTP site somewhere,

After much faffing about, I decided that all the these important Atari rom images ought to be listed all in one place, so the Atari firmware page was born!!

uip micro tcp/ip stack for 8-bit atari?
A few weeks ago uip was presented. It's a 4Kb tcp/ip stack written in CC65. It can be ported to several 8-bit computers. It already runs on a stock c64 with a SLIP connection.
To see the web-server on the c64:

http://c64.cc65.org/

Now after this a few people looked and saw that almost the complete code could be compiled to be used on the 8-bit Atari. Only the rs232c part from the c64 is different. Ken Siders has started a rewrite for this part and he is already 3/4 complete. The you will have uip+web-server + slip connection on the 8-bit. After this he wants to write a PPP layer so you can connect directly with modem to the internet...
Let's hope this all will be finished soon...

Chu Chu Rocket - a brand new game for the ATARI STE/FALCON

Guildford, Surrey - September 2001. The Reservoir Gods announce the imminent release of "Chu Chu Rocket"; an arcade puzzle game for the Atari STe and Falcon030.

"Chu Chu Rocket" originally appeared on the 128-bit Sega Dreamcast console and immediately gained critical acclaim for its innovative and addictive gameplay.

"Chu Chu Rocket" is a game for 1 to 4 players. It incorporates a number of different modes of play including a four player battles, single player puzzle levels and co-operative challenge stages.

The base machine for the game is the Atari STe, it was felt that this was the minimum requirement to achieve a comparable gaming experience to the 128-bit original. The extra hardware features of this machine are used to their fullest extent, including the blitter, extended palettes, jaguar pad support and stereo sampled sound.

The game features graphics by "shTHREE" and new Reservoir Gods member "neo". It also has an unprecedented 14 pieces of exclusive new Sid- Sound music composed by the award winning "MSG".

All the original sound effects from the DreamCast version have been sampled for this version, including all the sampled speech.

The game features 100 levels of puzzles across 4 different worlds, 25 levels of multiplayer gaming and 25 challenge stages. There are extra secret features which get unlocked on completing sections of the game. Reservoir Gods were formed in 1994 as a software team developing products for Atari computers. There releases to date include the games "Double Bobble 2000", "Tautology 2", "SkyFall", "Static" and "Bunion Canyon". They have also created the art package "GodPaint", GameBoy emulator "GodBoy", Nintendo NES emulator "GodleNES" and have been responsible for the disk magazine "Maggie".

After a period of inactivity, they are now hard at work creating new products for the Atari platform, ably supported by new members "neo" and technical specialist "Griff" (formerly of "Inner Circle").

"Chu Chu Rocket" is set to ship in October 2001.

Here is the new version of Icon Extract 1.2. This one supports icons 32 bits of XP windows. The interfacing in fashion 2 and 16 colors have been improven and the display is correct in monochrome fashion.

Small recall, this program permits to recover icons windows to the ICO format, CUR, ANI as well as librerians of icons to the ICL format and DLL. All icons in 2, 16, 256 and True Color (24 and 32 bits) are saved in a RSC file (as the DESKICON.RSC). A RSC file is created for every size of icon (16, 32, 48, 64, 72, 96 and 128 pixels).

The installation is achieved with GEM Setup 2.01. It is recommended to have a fast machine (68030 + 68881/2) or to work with Magic PC or Magic Mac. Good downloading and see you later for the version 1.3 (suuport of the XPM files of the Linux world). Bests regards,

Something for the XL chipsound maniacs
Many of you probably know about an Atari XL/XE emulator SAP (Slight Atari Player) and a big music archive ASMA (Atari SAP Music Archive) at http://asma.dspaudio.com, but just in case that someone still doesn't know, have a visit and listen to your favourite melodies from both classic games and modern XL scene productions.

Of course, SAP is not an Atari XL/XE emulator, it only emulates the POKEY sound chip and 6502 CPU to provide full sound emulation.

Dear MyAtari reader,

I am pleased to announce that the April 2001 issue of MyAtari magazine is now available to download from our site, http://www.myatari.net.

I would like to apologise for the delay in releasing the April issue. This has been due to the long hours I have been recently working. Because I am currently working 60+ hours a week, I am finding it extremely difficult to find time to work on the magazine (all offers of help will be gratefully accepted) and answer my e-mails. Thank you for your patience.

However, the good news is that work on the May and June issues has already started and they should be released fairly soon (no really!). So, what are you waiting for? Visit us at www.myatari.net and download the issue today ;-)

New program : Icon Extract 1.0
I have just created a new program (Icon EXTRACT) for ATARI in downloading on my site: http://www.club-internet.fr/perso/lafabrie/ and on the site of Magic On Line (for the Little Big Competition) :
http://www.magical-side.de/lbc/

The installation of the program is make with GEMSetup 2.01

1 - Principle of the program :

Icon Extract extracts all icons of the ICO, CUR, ANI, ICL and DLL files of Windows in 2, 16 and 256 colors and save them in the RSC files created automatically (by group of 90 CICON structures to the maximum). At present icons in 24 bits are not supported. Sizes can be in 16x16, 32x32, 48x48, 64x64 and 72x72 pixels. At the time of the treatment, a resource file is created for every selected size. In the case of icons in 256 colors, there is the possibility to choose between the palette 8 bits of NVDI, of the Falcon 030 or the one under utilization for the recalcul of the CICON structures in 256 colors. Indeed under Windows, the notion of color palette doesn't exist, alone the first 16 colors must be respected to display the graphic interfacing. Of the numerous necessary calculations fact, it is counseled to have a recent computer and is equipped of an arithmetic coprocessor (68881/2). With regard to the library ICL files, DLL (solely with type NE) and ANI (cursor animated) files, there is first of all before treatment, an extraction of icons to the ICO format or CUR and creation of an index to save them.

The program permits by choice of scanner all one index or only a file.

The program was developed on a Falcon 030 (68030-68882) 14 Mo - TOS 4.02

+ CT2 rev B (32 Mo of TT Ram) with PURE C 1.1 and Interface 2.33. It uses functions Mydial 2.19 and the XRSRC routines (for files extended RSC). It's important to see the RSC files created. Many Userdefs objects have been created as for example for funds of screen and windows of dialogue, rod of progression and button.

Four versions are available :
- 68030
- 68030 + 68881/2
- 68000
- 68000 + 68881/2

This program has been tested on Falcon 030 (68030-68882) + CT2 rev B, PC

Pentium III 866 Mhz (with Magic PC) and a IMac Power PC 333 Mhz (with Magic Mac PC). It's work with Magic ATARI, NAES and TOS only.
All functions of the program are available. In the case of a version no recorded, a dialog box appears during 10 seconds at the time of the opening and the closing of the program.

2 - The program supports the following elements :
- Support of Bubble GEM (in French, Spanish and English).
- Help in line to the format ST-Guide (in French, Spanish and English).
- Help in line to the HTML format (French solely) in my web page.
- RSC file in French, Spanish and English.
- Documentation (11 Mo) to the format CDK Calamus SL 2000 for the registred version (French solely).

3 - Resolution and computer counseled :

The program functions in all graphic fashions from a resolution of 640 x 480. Nevertheless it is counseled to use him in 256 colors. In one fashion superior there is a small problem of first 256 color respect again for the calculation of the CICON structures 8 bits. It is preferable to have a fast computer (TT, Falcon or better...) with an arithmetic coprocessor and 8 Mo of RAM.

Future supports :
- OCX files, EXE (Windows) and XPM (Linux).
- In head of files Windows to the PE format.
- Icons in 24 bits.

4 - Internet site:
A list of about 20 sites to download icons to the ICO format, CUR, ANI and ICL is available on my site in the category of Extract Icon and on the help in line to the format ST-Guide.

5 - To contact me and download the program :
http://www.club-internet.fr/perso/lafabrie/
E-mail: lafabrie@club-internet.fr

I hope that my contribution to our world will bring a puff of oxygen (come directly of the Pyrenees) in this spring a few belated.
Best regard,

The Atari ST QuickFAQ
As announced a few days ago by its former author and maintainer, Nicholas Bales, I have now taken over this classic document's daily authoring and maintenance.

The new URL goes as follow:

http://quickfaq.atari.org/
http://funkyware.atari.org/
http://members.tripod.com/~TT030/

From that starting point, there are EU and US mirrors. However, PLEASE DO NOT LINK DIRECTLY TO EITHER OF THOSE MIRRORS from your online bookmarks, as the location of both are entirely dependant upon whatever is my current ISP; only Tripod is permanent.

I have already uploaded an improved version of the QuickFAQ and am currently in the process of reviewing all links found in the document. At this point, the main changes are:

* cleaned up HTML, upgraded to XHTML conformance, with CSS.
* some details on TT and Falcon TOS versions.
* new maintainer name.

Over the next few days, additions will include:

* Stacy Language disks (once I remember where I put them).
* Falcon language disks (once I remember where I put them).
* general restructuring to allow for easier inclusion of new hardware-specific material on the Stacy, ST Book, MEGA, TT, Falcon, clones and emulators.
* automated mirroring of the US site from the EU source site (currently, only the EU site is auto-mirrored from my source documents on the TT; because the US provider only offers FTP access, I cannot use UNIX tools to streamline the process there)

In closing, I would like to thank Nick for the fantastic job he has already done maintaining this document until today and for his trust in my abilities to maintain his legacy in the future. Hopefully, wherever his new computing horizons take him, he will still find interresting challenges and a stimulating life.

It's been a while, so I thought Atari fans could use an update from Songbird... read on if you're looking forward to new Lynx and Jaguar games! * Distant Lands - Chris Vick is in full swing on this upcoming overhead fantasy RPG, and I have to say, the demos I've been trying out are very polished. The main game engine still isn't complete yet, but a lot of features are there -- talking, interacting, picking up and dropping objects, layered graphics (you can walk under tree canopies, roofs, etc.), simple combat, and more. I'll put some new screen shots up demonstrating these featuers if there's interest. * Cybervirus - This game came to Songbird about 80% complete. The main game engine is fully implemented and I've not uncovered a single bug yet. However, only one mission was built in to the game, and my plan is to include no fewer than 20 missions in the final product. I have set up descriptions and binary headers for 20 missions, but so far I haven't had time to build them into the game, plus make the usual intro/credits changes and so on. I will be hard pressed to get this game out by summer, but CGE2K1 may be doable. * Ultravore - Lest you think this game has been forgotten... quite the contrary, the game is in active development. I was thrilled to discover that two-player support was already included in the source, so now the focus has turned to implementing a Lynx-controlled opponent, health meters, etc. There is also probably room for one or two new fighters -- if anyone reading this is a talented 2D fighter/superhero animator, please contact me (songbird at atari.net). * Protector: Special Edition - Nearly two years after the initial release of Protector to enthusiastic fans, Songbird is laying the groundwork for a Special Edition of the game later this year. Prot: SE will include a ton of new artwork and landscapes and music, as well new waves of foes and some important gameplay tweaks to make this great Jaguar game even better. Plus, the game is slated to include CD Bypass code, to allow new unencrypted CD games to be played on a regular Jaguar CD unit. * Rapid Fire Controllers - More of these should be available by summer, stay tuned to the Songbird pages for details. Thanks to all the Atari fans that continue to support the new releases. Each purchase you make helps pave the way for future efforts, and reinforces to all Atari hobby developers that the fans will support new games with their wallets. Have a great Easter weekend! The chip ABE-60 was optimised and the SDR-60 (SDRAM controller) seems to The be nice... data transfers performances are the ones that are on my The web pages...They were calculated with the SDR60 capacities and the The MOVE.L instruction execution time of the 060.
So, A BURST READ/WRITE into an OPENED PAGE (HIT) gives : - 8 / 7 cycles ---> 128 / 146 MBytes/s at 64 MHz !
A BURST READ/WRITE into a new page (MISS) gives : -13 / 11 cycles ---> 79 / 93 MBytes/s at 64 MHz !
This last test assumes that each access is into a new page (CPU jumps This over the page frontier). test is commonly called 'RANDOM ACCESS'.
Pages sizes are from 4 to 16 KBytes depending of the SDRAM DIMM capacity & model (see the table of 'SDRAM').
The next phase will be the ROUTING of the board... Unfortunately, I have no more time to do that and it will not done before April.... My principle job since beginning of January is RIORED-J and it has the biggest priority in a market (and financial) point of view...
Next (good) news will be in April...
PS : the NEMBENCH 2.1 value still to be missing for the HADES WITHOUT EDO (FPM) into my table ! Thanks for your help.

Electronic musician B.C. releases music CD, made using an Atari ST
B.C. is an electronic musician who has been active in the Amiga scene for the past three years doing module music on the Aminet. He has now released an electronic music CD which was created with the help of an Atari 1040ST.

Entitled "2000 B.C." this CD offers a mix of electronic music, with stylings ranging from ambient to new age. The music was done using three synthesizers, a drum machine, an Amiga 1000, and an Atari 1040ST running Steinberg-12.

The CD may be purchased for $6.99 at B.C.'s mp3.com website: http://www.mp3.com/2000bc. This site also features streaming and mp3 downloads of selected tracks off this album. Please visit, and help support Atari music.

The new service, which will become active in the immediate future, will allow owners of handheld computers, such as the Palm, Visor, Psion, Casio with PalmOS or PocketPC (and some cell phones compatible with AvantGo for off-line reading contents), to read Atari news on the go. Currently, MagiC Online is the primary news provider for the service (and as a result, the news scope of MagiC Online will be increasing in the future, as it has gradually been doing over the last few months) but we plan on other News providers to sign on in the future.

Unfortunately we wasn't able to release it last week. Even if I've been asked to don't give any release-date anymore I think I can do it yet - I've got the mail from Moonwalker responsible for the graphics to our forthcoming productions and he said that everything is already done! So all we have to do this week are the boring tests on the powered Falcons etc. So expect this release any day now!
